iMAP Malaysia 2023 Internet Censorship Report

Key Findings

A total of 530 links were found to experience instances of blockings from July 2022 to June 2023. These websites ranged from pornography, political criticism, gambling, LGBT, file sharing, news media, religion, culture, media sharing, online dating, e-commerce, gaming, to hosting and blogging platforms.

DNS tampering was the main method used to implement censorship.

Malaysia Now news site and Malaysia Today political commentary blog are new findings of blockings during the coverage period. Both sites are perceived to be critical to the current administration.

The official website of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Election, bersih.org, continued to be blocked during the coverage period.
